Ford Law Pros Secures $100,000 Settlement for Returning Citizens in Employment Discrimination Case Against DC Construction Company

Washington, D.C. –- Ford Law Pros, P.C. announced today that it has secured a $100,000 settlement on behalf of Eric A. Marbury and Devon Spencer in their lawsuit against The Justin Company, Inc., resolving claims of unlawful discrimination and wrongful termination. The case was brought after both plaintiffs alleged they were laid off on discriminatory grounds in violation of federal and state law. Marbury and Spencer are both returning citizens who obtained full-time employment with The Justin Company.

Between 2021 and 2022, Marbury and Spencer were separately hired by The Justin Company, a D.C.-based construction company, as unskilled laborers to work on commercial construction projects. However, in or around June 2023, both men were informed they would be laid off due to an alleged “absence of work.”  They were promised that they would be put back to work as soon as business picked up again, but it never happened. The plaintiffs contended that their layoffs were not based on business necessity but were instead motivated by discrimination, prompting them to file suit seeking justice and accountability.

The matter has now concluded with a $100,000 settlement providing compensation and closure to the plaintiffs. While The Justin Company denied any wrongdoing as part of the agreement, the resolution reflects the strength of the plaintiffs’ claims and the seriousness of workplace discrimination.

The plaintiffs’ claims included wrongful termination, workplace discrimination, and violations of labor law protections, asserting that The Justin Company failed to comply with federal and D.C. employment statutes.
